QR code fundamentals
Do QR codes expire?
A static QR code does not contain a timer or expiry date. It keeps encoding the same content for as long as the physical or digital image remains readable.
Short answer: static QR codes do not expire. The content is encoded directly into the pattern. A link inside one can still fail later if the destination changes, the domain expires or the printed code becomes unreadable.
Static and dynamic QR codes are different
A static QR code stores its final content in the code itself. For a website, that means the destination URL is part of the black-and-white module pattern. There is no account, redirect service or subscription needed to keep that pattern working.
A product sold as a dynamic QR code usually stores a short redirect address controlled by a service provider. Scanning first visits that service, which then sends the visitor to a destination that can be changed later. The QR image may remain readable, but the redirect can stop if the account, plan, provider or domain stops working.
Why a static QR link can still stop working
- The destination moves. A page is renamed or deleted without a redirect.
- The domain is not renewed. The code still contains the same URL, but that address no longer serves the intended site.
- Access changes. A public file becomes private, or a login is introduced.
- The print deteriorates. Damage, fading, glare or obstruction can stop cameras detecting the pattern.
- The code was wrong at print time. A typo cannot be edited inside an already printed static QR code.
How to make a long-lived QR code
- Use a destination on a domain you control.
- Choose a durable page address instead of a temporary file or preview link.
- Test the downloaded file and a final-size printed proof with real phones.
- Keep redirects in place if the destination page moves.
- Retain the source artwork so a damaged sign or label can be replaced.
What “no expiry” means on this site
Free QR Codes creates static codes. We do not put your destination behind our redirect, account or subscription. That removes service-controlled expiry, but it cannot keep a destination owned by you or another provider online.
