How big should a QR code be?

There is no single useful minimum QR code size for every job. A short URL on a business card and a dense QR on a poster can contain different numbers of modules, and the intended scanning distance also matters.

This calculator uses the content you actually intend to encode to determine the QR version and module count, then combines that with the scanning distance and conservative physical-size assumptions.

Business cards, labels and posters

Gloss, curvature, damage, low contrast, printer quality and camera quality can all change real-world behaviour.

  • Business cards and small labels: module size and print sharpness can become the limiting factor before distance does.
  • Table tents and counter signs: allow extra margin for real viewing angles and imperfect lighting.
  • Posters and window signs: scanning distance usually becomes the dominant factor.
  • Dense payloads: more modules can increase the physical size required for the same module size.

Keep the quiet zone clear

Leave at least four empty modules on every side and do not place text or artwork inside that space.

Print without distortion

Keep the code square, use strong dark-on-light contrast and avoid tiny logos, gloss or curved surfaces where possible.

Scan a final-size proof from the intended distance under realistic lighting before committing to a full print run.
